The headline on the front page of the Ukiah paper read: “Inmate Suicide A Local Transient.”
We think of transients as non-local, but Lance Scholfield, 29, was local. Lance attended Boonville schools, and many of us will remember that the Scholfields lived in Yorkville, and then they lived across the highway from Jack’s Valley Store where they didn’t quite complete construction of the home they were building there.
The family broke up and Lance, by then an adult, moved on out to the Mendocino Coast where he came to have no fixed address. On Thursday the 21st of April, Lance was arrested at Bainbridge Park in Fort Bragg. After a rather prolonged struggle with the arresting officers, Lance was driven to the County Jail on Low Gap Road Ukiah.
That night, just after lights out at 9pm, Lance hanged himself, and three days later he died at Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa. His death saddens everyone who knew him.
